Libby Christensen received a first place award in the category of “People” in the International Open Amateur Photography Contest. Her photo, “Carnevale Porcelain,” was chosen from thousands of entries. The winning photo will be displayed in an Internet gallery at www.picture.com and published in a special-edition book entitled Endless Journeys.

Christensen explains that she believes the subject was a “man dressed as a woman, using white make-up to resemble the traditional porcelain masks of Carnevale in Venice, Italy.” She says the artwork was a snapshot and that “He/she wasn’t even aware I was taking the picture. During Carnevale, streets are thronged with people in costume, dancing or posing. It’s a photographer’s dream!”

No stranger to awards, Christensen has won over 20 ribbons for her photography in various local art contests. Last year her work was accepted in Selma, Alabama’s “Arts Revive,” featuring about 50 Alabama artists. Twice she had photos chosen in international competition to be published in Photographer Forum Magazine’s Best of Photography Annuals (1985 and 1989). She also had six photos selected for The Domesday Project Videodisc, 1986, in a United Kingdom competition sponsored by the BBC.

Christensen is an instructor at South University in Montgomery. She is past president of the Society of Arts and Crafts in Central Alabama. Currently, she serves as Vice President and Publicity Chairman for the Elmore County Art Guild.
